Secret Service Agents securing Vado Elementary for Bernie Sanders rally
Secret Service agents are coordinating with the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, Las Cruces Police, New Mexico State Police, and El Paso Police ahead of Democratic Presidential hopeful, Bernie Sander’s, visit to Vado.
Sanders is scheduled to address supporters at a rally at Vado Elementary Saturday.
The Secret Service is expecting nearly 4,000 people to show up. Staff at Vado Elementary told ABC-7 they were told by their school district supervisors 10,000 visitors are expected at the rally.
Although the Secret Service could not provide specifics of its security plan, it said there will be “air assistance and metal detectors” for the rally.
Agents said visitors will start going through the metal detectors at 9 a.m. And “it will be a slow process.” Visitors are urged to bring water and clear bottles. No bags will be allowed.
Vado residents are excited about the visit, but some said they do not plan on attending.
“I think it is great to have a man of that caliber here,” Vado mother said, “I’m not (attending the rally). I have to many kids.”
“It’s awesome that someone’s coming here to Vado, and I don’t know, it might help the community,” another resident said.
The Secret Service will allow those attending the rally to park along the streets at Vado, which will not be closed during the rally.
Doors at Vado Elementary open at 10 a.m. Sanders is scheduled to speak at Noon.
Plan accordingly. There is little to no shade at the school and the nearest restaurants and gasoline stations are blocks away from the school.
Portable restrooms will be set up in and around the school grounds.
