Regis-Bernard Furniture to close El Paso stores after 83 years in business
Regis-Bernard Furniture is closing its stores at 1446 N. Lee Trevino Drive and 304 S. Stanton Street because its owner is retiring, according to a news release.
Regis-Bernard Furniture traces part of its roots to the early 1950’s when founder Irvin Nadler sold general merchandise door-to-door in El Paso.
Customers didn’t always have the cash they needed to purchase his merchandise, so Nadler would sell products on credit, accepting payments over time on an installment basis, a news release states.
Nadler would pay weekly visits to each of his customers to collect the payments. He eventually developed a great reputation and his business steadily grew.
In 1957, Nadler found an empty space at 304 S. Stanton St. in downtown El Paso and opened a furniture, appliances and electronics store called Regis Furniture Co.
He began operating with the slogan, “The name you have come to trust!”
In 1965, Nadler bought Bernard Furniture Co. from his good friend Morris Bernard. Nadler renamed the new business Regis-Bernard Furniture Co.
In 1997, Regis-Bernard opened its second location at 1446 N. Lee Trevino Dr. The showroom was promoted as “the most beautiful furniture showroom this side of the Mississippi.”
Today, Regis-Bernard is owned and operated by Irvin Nadler’s sons Gary and Lee.
“We really have enjoyed serving our customers all these years,” Gary Nadler said. “We get the greatest joy when a family of three generations come into our store and says ‘we will only buy from Regis-Bernard – all of the furniture in our house comes from RB.'”
“We are proud to have helped so many people in this way,” Lee Nadler said. “This retirement is a celebration of many years of providing great value, service and financing to our community.”
