ABC-7 Listens 06.04.16

abc-7 is in the information business. here he is with this week’s abc-7 listens. we reported extensively on the trial of jan michael nieves. he’s the former fort bliss soldier who was accused of driving drunk, crashing into a construction site and killing two workers. he ended up being found guilty of manslaughter and getting probation. juan saw our coverage … “your newscast makes it a point of emphasis that the man involved was a former fort bliss soldier. “wha does that have to do with anything? he was 18 years old, made a terrible decision to drink and drive that night. “probably a private, maybe private first class at the most. “n need to point out his former military status. no need at all.” we’ve actually touched on this topic in the past … and for us it’s all about information. if nieves was a former high school teacher … we would say that and probably name the high school. if he was a former u-tep athlete … that would be included as well. maybe he was a one-time city employee? and in all those cases … sharing the person’s age would go along with the story. so we aren’t singling out fort bliss soldiers … we are trying our best to provide insight and context.
