Juarez voters flock to polls

Today is Election Day all across Mexico and although voting is largely the same around the world parts of their process is different than what we use at home.

Sunday Juarez will be electing its next mayor, governor, and nine state representatives

“Each eligible voter has a federal ID we use this to make sure they’re in the right place and eligible to vote for a representative,” said poll station volunteer Sergio Pacheco Gonzalez.

Voter IDs have several security features like the voter’s picture and thumbprint. If everything checks out each person is then given their appropriate ballots, one for each position that needs to be elected

“From the moment a voter is given their ballot to when they turn it in they’re in complete control so they can cast a free and secret vote,” Pacheco explained.

Once voters choose who they want to represent them at the state and local levels they cast their ballots in a transparent box which volunteers and party representatives keep a close eye on, making sure no votes are tampered with. After that their thumbs are marked with dark ink

“The indelible mark is there to make sure than no voter goes and tries to cast a second ballot and this or another location, each person gets only one vote,” Pacheco said.

Every step of the electoral process made to combat one thing: voter fraud.
