NMSU baseball’s Daniel Johnson named to all-region team

GREENSBORO, N.C. –Junior Daniel Johnson was named American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings First Team All-Region for the Midwest region, the organization announced onWednesday. He is the 12th Aggie to receive this honor, and the first since 2011.

“This is a great honor for Daniel and for our program,” said head coach Brian Green. “We are so proud of D.J., and what a great story of determination and hard work he is. In my 22 years of coaching, I have never seen a player make the strides that he has made in one season. It really is a credit to his work ethic, makeup, character and his talent.”

A native of Vallejo, Calif., Johnson continues to receive accolades after his breakout season. Named the 2016 Western Athletic Conference Player of Year by the league’s 10 head coaches, Johnson was also named First Team All-WAC, WAC All-Tournament, NCBWA National Hitter of the Month and Louisville Slugger National Hitter of the Week.

The fifth-round selection of the Washington Nationals in the 2016 MLB First Year Player Draft, Johnson finished fourth nationally in hits (94), fifth in runs scored (67), 16th in stolen bases (29-of-33), 32nd in batting average (.382) and 40th in slugging percentage (.630). Additionally, he led the WAC in batting average, hits, home runs, stolen bases and runs scored.

By being named First Team All-Region, Johnson is automatically nominated for All-America honors. The ABCA will announce the All-America teams onSaturday, June 18.
