Staying safe in the weekend heat
The triple digits seemed to keep a lot of people at home Saturday morning as parks stood empty, but this Father’s Day weekend many families have plans, even if it’s hot. If you’re going to come outside, there are some things you need to keep in mind
“Much easier to swim indoors than to be out there riding a bike in this terrible heat,” said Silvia Lomeli who was visiting one of the city’s public pools.
Avoiding the sun is one of the safer ways to stay healthy this summer, with temperatures hitting 106 degrees it’s easy to get dehydrated.
“Make sure you drink a lot of fluids, especially children,” said physician’s assistant Cody Hawkes.
With the entire weekend seeing triple digit temps the easiest way to beat the heat could be some rescheduling, being outdoors in the early morning or late evening, and the safest place to be during the day is indoors.
“Stay around a fan or some type of breeze or air conditioning,” Hawkes said.
The heat doesn’t mean you’ll have to cancel your Father’s Day picnic, as long as you’re safe about it.
“Have some type of shade or a canopy you can take with you, or umbrella. Make sure, like I said, that you have a lot of fluids available,” said hawkes.
With these temperatures everyone needs to stay hydrated, it doesn’t matter how active you are, and you should drink water all day, not just waiting until you’re thirsty
