The Heat is On!

This is the time of year we get to deal with some severe weather – namely the heat. Did you realize that out of all the weather events that take place across the country, heat is the number one killer? Heat surpasses lightning, tornadoes, floods and cold to dominate the list. El Paso has already witnessed eight triple digit days (as of June 20) with 108 degrees being the hottest so far (hit that Saturday, June 18).

June is our hottest month of the year followed very closely by July. We average 95.5 degrees for June.

To combat the heat – follow some of these tips:

Warning signs of heat related illness – Extreme sweating, dizziness, cramps and headache.
Watch the Weather – In extreme heat stay indoors and spend more time in air conditioning.
Dress for Heat – Wear light-colored clothing that is well ventilated. Wear hat and sunscreen.
Drink a lot – Plenty of water. Limit alcohol and caffeinated drinks. Alcohol will dehydrate you even further during the hot conditions.
