Mayor’s Office seeking to lower I-10 speed limit in El Paso

According to the El Paso City Council agenda for Tuesday, July 12th, Mayor Leeser will seek to lower the speed limit on I-10 construction zones.

The agenda item states, “with ongoing road construction occurring with the Texas Department of Transportation along Interstate 10, there is a growing concern over increased traffic. Mayor Leeser is seeking authority to send a letter to the Texas Transportation Commission and the Texas Department of Transportation to requests that speeds along Interstate 10 be lowered during the period of construction.”

The agenda item sites that 359 accidents have been reported on I-10 between Redd Road and Porfirio Diaz from April 1st, 2015 and June 20th, 2016.

In the agenda item it also states that, “the large number of accidents along the interstate is cause for concern and for that reason, El Paso Police Department has advised that a decrease in the speed limit would help sustain the flow of traffic and address speed concerns.”

It is unclear what location(s) on I-10 the Mayor’s Office is seeking to lower, and what speed is being suggested.
