Most LCPS school buses lack air conditioning

The Las Cruces School District is taking proactive measures to deal with these week’s extreme heat.

Dr. Steven Sanchez, interim Superintendent with the district called a meeting at 6 PM Sunday meeting to address possible issues the district may face this week, due to the heat.

Though school is not currently in session, the district has over 3,000 students currently participating in summer classes and camps. The districts biggest concern is the lack of air conditioning on most of the schools 40 school buses currently in use.

Water is being provided for students who do not have any when they get on the buses in the afternoon. Bus drivers were also given flyers about heat exhaustion, to help them identify students that could possibly need help.

The district explained to ABC-7 that the reason most of the school buses do not have air conditioning is because the cost is too high. The district says air conditioned buses typically cost 10,000 dollars more, have lower gas millage, and higher maintenance costs.
