El Paso golfer qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Richard Yai of El Paso, Texas parred the third playoff hole to win a trip to the 2016 US Amateur Championship at Oakland Hills CC in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The 28-year old outlasted a field of 46 over 36 holes to claim the lone qualifying spot to the nation’s largest and most important amateur championship.

Yai posted rounds of 66-74 to finish at four-under par but was joined in the playoff by Isaac Merry of Las Cruces, N.M. who consistently posted two rounds of two-under 70.

The two halved the first two holes of the playoff, but Merry was unable to get up-and-down from just over the green on UNM’s par-three third hole while Yai two putted for par.

The US Amateur Championship begins August 15 and runs through the 21st.
