Look who’s climbing now at the El Paso Zoo!
The infant orangutan at the El Paso Zoo has started climbing independently.
Khaleesi, the 1-year-old Sumatran orangutan, is now climbing and exploring on her own.
Her mom, Ibu, has been teaching her the ropes, and is letting her roam the enclosure by herself.
The staff at the zoo has made changes in the exhibit to help Khaleesi get around, which include a new special climbing ladder. The ladder is strong enough for dad but small enough for Khaleesi. The staff also added new and adjusted fire hoses that are more accessible for the little hands and there are also new, and lower swinging options for the baby to play on.
“”We will continue to adapt the orangutan habitat as Khaleesi continues to grow, develop and climb independently,” said Collections Supervisor Griselda Martinez. “Climbing independently is a developmental milestone and Khaleesi seems to be advanced for her age. It’s a fact that Ibu is very bright, and we believe Ibu has taught her well.”
Khaleesi and Ibu are on exhibit at the El Paso Zoo Thursday to Sunday.
