Power outages reported due to downed power lines in east El Paso

Strong gusts Friday night knocked down several electric poles in east El Paso. This happened around 7:30 p.m. near Yarbrough and 1-10.

El Paso Electric reported several outages throughout the area because of the high winds, most concentrated in east El Paso. Up to 5,000 customers were affected.

EPE said line crews are working to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.

EPE have some tips for those experiencing outages:

– Avoid opening the refrigerator and freezer doors. A full, unopened freezer should keep food frozen up to 48 hours. Food should stay cold in an unopened refrigerator for 24 hours.

– Disconnect appliances that would go on automatically when power is restored or that may become damaged due to voltage irregularities. These appliances include computers, VCRs, televisions, stereos, and answering machines.

– Candles can be fire hazards. Never place them near flammable materials and never leave them unattended.
