Major changes in store for El Paso Motorplex
ABC-7 has learned $1.8 million is being invested in the El Paso Motorplex in Socorro.
The complex, located just off I-10, already has a dirt-cart course and a drag racing course. Plans are underway to pave a 2.1 mile road course.
Minor construction has already begun at the Motorplex, where the owners are running computer simulations of the track to work out any kinks before the pavement goes down.
The new track can’t come soon enough for some. “We have racers here that have to travel hundreds and hundreds of miles to go race,” Dan Thomas, an avid racer, said.
The paved road course is expected to attract business to the Borderland. “Instead of us going to Phoenix, and us going to Dallas, Dallas and Phoenix will be coming to us,” Thomas said.
According to Lyle Byrum, President of the Motorplex, two national racing events have already been promised to the Motorplex when its new course is completed.
Byrum expects the finish date to be about one year away, although no official date has been set at this time.
