Paralyzed Las Cruces dog a finalist for national ‘Hero Dog Award’
Mango, a 4-year-old dog who uses two wheels to get around, is a finalist in the 6th Annual Hero Dog Awards, a national contest.
Judy Walter adopted Mango in 2013. She says Mango was a stray, hit by a car and scheduled to be euthanized until a rescue team saved her. Mango is now paralyzed and uses a custom made wheel chair to get around.
Walter says Mango is a therapy dog that helps veterans. With the help of generous donors, Mango has also provided more than 150 custom built wheelchairs to help other animals regain their ability to be mobile again.
“She’s a healer,” Walter said.
The winner of the Hero Dog Award will be awarded a grant for its selected charity partner. Mango’s handler has chosen Hand in Paw, which improves human health and well-being through animal-assisted therapy.
