Border favorite Morrissey to wrap up world tour at Chavez Theatre

Morrissey, who stopped singing mid-song and walked off stage the last time he was in El Paso, announced a world tour that is expected to conclude with a performance at the Abraham Chavez Theatre.

He apparently was concerned about the safety of some fans who jumped on stage during the encore and were apprehended by security personnel, a publicist told ABC-7 after the May 13, 2014 show at the Plaza Theatre. Morrissey, the publicist added, felt it was best to just end the show and exit right.

This fall, the Smiths’ founder and singer will return to Downtown El Paso to close out a tour that includes stops in Japan, China and Australia, according to “True to You,” a trusted website dedicated to news about Morrissey.

The new tour, announced Wednesday, technically begins Sept. 20 in Louisville, Ky. However, Morrissey is expected to appear at the Riot Fest in Chicago three days prior. According to the music blog “Pitchfork,” Morrissey will also be in Berlin on Aug. 16, four days before a one-night-only in his hometown of Manchester, England — the only date in the entire United Kingdom.

After five late October dates in and around Australia, the Moz will return to the Western United States and, starting Sept. 9, will play Morrissey strongholds in Irvine, Calif., Reno, Nev., Boulder, Colo., Dallas, San Antonio, Houston and El Paso. Since the early 90s, Morrissey has played the Don Haskins Center, El Paso County Coliseum, Plaza Theater and several El Paso nightclubs.

On Nov. 23, and for the first time since 2009, Morrissey will return to the Chavez Theater. And it’s just in time for Thanksgiving.
