Families flock to Grand Opening of Sue Young Spray Park

Families flocked to Northeast El Paso for the grand opening of Sue Young Spray Park Saturday.

The park is located on 9730 Diana Drive in Northeast El Paso.

The park is the first of its kind and includes interactive zones for people of all ages. Users are continuously showered with water. The spray park uses recirculating water through filtration and chemical sanitation systems.

Families and children geared up in their bathing suits and swimming trucks and enjoyed the park’s amenities and features.

“It’s so much more more efficient in terms of how much we spend as a resource in our community. It costs about $75,000 to upgrade a traditional outdoor pool. And this one will cost only $17,000. So about 1/5 of the cost. So it’s a more cost-effective to way for us all to cool off and enjoy ourselves,” Tracy Novak, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department said.

Seven spray parks will be constructed throughout the City. Each park will include 20-30 water features, as well as a decorative anti-slip coating in order to enhance the safety of its users, and separate zones for toddlers, teens, and adults. Parks are also equipped with benches, shaded picnic units, new trash receptacles, security lighting, ADA accessible sidewalks, and landscaping and trees with their own irrigation system.

The project cost one million dollars, the total budget for all four parks is $5,000,000.

Three spray parks are currently under construction including the Grandview Spray Park on 3100 Jefferson and the Hidden Valley Spray Park on 200 Coconut Tree. Both will open this fall. The Pavo Real Enhanced Spray Park on 9301 Alameda will open in Spring 2017.

More spray parks will be constructed at the following locations: Westside Community Park, 7400 High Ridge; Marty Robbins, 11600 Vista Del Sol; Braden Aboud, 4325 River Bend; Salvador Rivas, 12480 Pebble Hills.
