Back to School Coverage: Traffic safety

For those of you who live in the Clint, Socorro or Canutillo school districts — expect to see a stronger presence from the Sheriff’s Office.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is increasing patrols around schools and will be looking for drivers and passengers who aren’t wearing seatbelts. The Sheriff’s Office warns drivers to always be aware of school zones and speed limits. Drivers should never use their cell phones while driving — especially while in a school zone.

Here are some other things to remember while driving in a school zone:

Keep in mind that children may unexpectedly walk onto the road without looking for oncoming traffic.
Approaching drivers must stop behind a bus when it is operating a visual signal (flashing red lights or a stop sign)
Failure to stop behind a bus that is operating a visual signal could result in a fine of up to $1,250 for a first offense.
