Back-to-School Coverage: Businesses get boost with school back in session

This time of the year is not just busy for schools. It’s also busy for the restaurants and businesses that surround the schools.

Several high schools in the city have an “open campus” policy that allows students to leave school and go out for lunch. Restaurants around these schools notice a significant increase in sales once school is back in session.

JV’s Pizza, 2000 N Lee Trevino Dr., is right across the street from Hanks High School. Management estimates they get around 100 students coming in everyday during lunchtime. The manager told ABC-7 that they rely on the lunch rush.

“They help us with our sales, because it’s calm in the morning,” manager Monica Cordero said. “In the afternoon, they help us. They help us a lot.”

The lunch rush also means the restaurant has to double its pizza production. Cordero said that on average, they make 60 pizzas more when school is in session.
