Commission: Historic Toltec building now complaint with city code
The Building and Standards Commission on Wednesday discussed the condition of the Toltec building in downtown El Paso.
The historic building, owned by Billy Abraham, was inspected in May when field agents found several code violations and gave Abraham a deadline to get the violations fixed.
The Toltec building was built in 1910 and was the place to be for many prominent El Pasoans.
In May, building inspectors issued a long list of code violations that included fire damage, non-compliant electrical and plumbing work.
On Wednesday, the chairman of the Building and Standards Commission told ABC-7 the building is now compliant with the city’s requests but there are two items that Abraham still needs to take care of.
“They have to produce the structural reports to ensure the structure is up to standards and they also have to ensure that the HVAC is up to standards. The owner, it is my understanding that they have hired engineers to do that for them,” said Jesse Sanchez, Chairman of the Building and Standards Commission.
Sanchez told ABC-7 Abraham has 30 days to come up with the engineering report and take care of the heating and air conditioning issues.
In March of 2015 Abraham was sentenced to two years in prison for running over a man with his car six years ago. He has six months left to serve.
