TxDOT holds community meeting to discuss Doniphan Drive Corridor Plan
The Texas Department of Transportation held a public meeting to discuss the Doniphan Drive Corridor Plan at El Paso Community College, Northwest Campus.
Community members got a chance to learn about the project that includes an 11-mile section of Doniphan Drive between the Texas/New Mexico state line and Mesa Street in El Paso county.
Doniphan road is also known as State Highway 20.
Gus Sanchez is a project manager for TxDOT.
“This is going to be like a master plan so we can see what improvements need to be done. We are going to prioritize them into short, mid and long-term projects when this study is over,” Sanchez said.
TxDOT provided Information about traffic conditions, safety, economic growth, needs and possible solutions within the Doniphan Corridor.
About a dozen people attended the meeting. Robert Sandoval said he came because he has a lot of concerns about Doniphan.
“There is a lot of issues with Doniphan drainage, no bus stops with any covers. No bike lanes, no sidewalks. It’s just one of our busiest streets and it’s has been neglected for a lot of years,” Sandoval said.
Delores Diaz lives in Vinton, but drives along Doniphan to visit her sister.
“We have so many floods and all that. people can not even get out of their houses because there is so much water on the sides,” Diaz said.
Another community meeting will be held in Spring 2017. TxDOT hopes to have a final plan in place by Fall 2017.
