PD: Teacher told sex assault victim “he had control of grade book”
A 13-year-old girl told detectives a former Riverside Middle School teacher would take her into an office in the locker room where he would kiss her and expose himself, a complaint affidavit states.
Police Thursday charged Adam Lee Newport, 35, with Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child and Improper Relationship Between Educator and Student.
Newport was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility in Downtown El Paso on bonds totaling $200,000.
The victim told police, that one occasion, Newport exposed himself, grabbed her arm, and forced her to touch him. The victim also told police, that on two occasions, Newport put his hand down her pants and underwear, then sexually assaulted her.
The complaint affidavit states the victim said Newport kissed her breast on one occasion. When she asked him to stop, Newport allegedly told the victim “he had control of the grade book and not to try him,” the document states.
Police also recovered photos Newport allegedly sent to the victim via text messages. The photos allegedly show Newport’s penis, the complaint affidavit states. In the messages, Newport allegedly told the victim “there were still many sexual acts (he) wanted to do with the victim.”
Newport resigned Wednesday, an Ysleta Independent School District spokeswoman said.
The district emailed ABC-7 the following statement:
“The Ysleta Independent School District has strict policies regarding inappropriate relationships between employees and students. If the district is made aware of a violation of these policies, an immediate investigation is initiated and proper action is taken in accordance with district policy.Adam Newport was a Special Education teacher and coach at Riverside Middle School since 2007. Mr. Newport is no longer an employee of the Ysleta Independent School District. For more information, please contact the El Paso Police Department as this is an ongoing investigation.”
A search of online records from the State Board for Educator Certification shows Newport is certified to teach health, physical education and special education.
