ACT testing means LC vs. Centennial will compete with NMSU game
Las Cruces football fans will have to chose between two big games Saturday.
NMSU takes on Georgia State for its annual “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” game, but another big football game is scheduled at the same time: Las Cruces High versus Centennial High.
The Tough Enough to Wear Pink Game at Aggie Memorial Stadium wraps up a week of events raising awareness and funds for Breast Cancer and is scheduled for 6 P.M Saturday.
On the other side of town, one of the biggest high school football games of the season is expected to draw hundreds. Saturday high school football games are typically scheduled in the afternoon, but this week’s game is scheduled for 7 P.M.
Both games are known to draw hundreds, if not thousands of fans who will need to decide which game to attend.
ABC-7 asked Las Cruces Public Schools about the conflict and they say the reason it was rescheduled is because many of the students playing will be taking the ACT College Readiness Assessment.
The test, which is usually required to attend college, is only given on a handful of Saturday mornings. This Saturday in particular is a major testing date that falls before most college and scholarship application deadlines.
“It is a big ACT-SAT testing day and a lot of the seniors are testing from all of the teams so the coaches asked if they could play in the evening so they could take care of their testing,” LCPS Athletic Director Ernest Viramontes said.
Coaches ABC-7 spoke with say that although it conflicts with NMSU’s game, they agree with the decisions adding the players are “student-athletes” and academics will always come first.
