Suspect in Dallas police shooting killed

A carjacking suspect is dead after he was shot in what Dallas police said was an armed confrontation with an officer.

A statement on the Dallas Police Department live blog states 24-year-old Anthony Garcia died after he was shot while approaching officers while brandishing a handgun.

The shooting happened about 9:40 a.m. Wednesday in the Oak Cliff district about 5 miles west of downtown Dallas.

Police say a plainclothes officer investigating a Tuesday night carjacking spotted the vehicle that was reported stolen. At that point, the driver of the vehicle emerged from the driver’s seat and approached the officer with a handgun.

The officer shot the man. The officer wasn’t wounded, police said.

Police say another person was reported to be barricaded in a house nearby, but officers found no one there.
