Winner of the Sweet Play of the Week for week 8

EL PASO, Texas – Eastlake’s Ezekiel Jones truly knows how to make the best of a bad situation.

And for his incredible play, he was voted the winner of the Sweet Play of the Week for week eight. (Click on the video above to see the play).

Jones and teammate Ivan Avina collided on a kickoff return Friday against Del Valle. Avina fell down and the ball came free for a few moments until Jones scooped it up. His blockers maintained their focus as well, and Jones was able to run down the sideline for an incredible touchdown.

“It wasn’t even me. It was the blockers in front of me,” said Jones, the Falcons running back and kickoff return man. “They made the play happen. It wasn’t even me.” What inspired him to make such a tremendous play? “I just couldn’t get yelled at by the coaches, that’s it. That’s all I was thinking,” he said. No coaches would be yelling anything but “great play” after a return like this one. As for the rest of Eastlake’s season, Jones says they have plenty of work still to do. He says a trip to the state final four is the goal for this team. “That’s the mentality,” he said. “We’ve got to win the next three games though. If we win the next three games then we’re district champs and we just keep going from there.” Eastlake has three regular season games remaining. They’ll face Horizon on Friday followed by Ysleta the next week. They cap off the regular season with a game at undefeated Canutillo.
