SPRING 2016 – Phishing attack compromises Olympia School District employee data
An attacker used a phishing email to obtain personal identifiable information on thousands of employees of the Olympia School District in Washington.
More than 2,100 employees, including 630 teachers, affected. Names, addresses, salary information and social security numbers compromised. Attacker spoofed the email address of the District Superintendent and sent a phishing email requesting the personal information of staff members employed during 2015. A school official said the information was sent to the outside party.

Phishing attacks spread from one compromised user account to another when a user clicks on a link in an email and then enters a username and password.
HUDSON, NY — The Superintendent of Hudson City Schools says the district is the victim of a phishing scam.
Superintendent Maria Suttmeier says the scam email appeared to come from the Superintendent of Schools.
She sent a letter to employees, letting them know that as a result of the scam, employee information, including social security numbers, were fraudulently obtained by an unauthorized person.
She also provided information for employees about how to keep the breach from negatively impacting their credit.
