El Paso County approves $162,000 for renovations at Veteran’s Park in Fabens
Just a few days before Veteran’s Day, El Paso County commissioners voted to allocate about $160,000 to give the Fabens Veteran’s Park a face-lift.
There are actually three parties involved in Fabens’ Veteran’s Park.
The El Paso Water District, El Paso County and the Fabens School District are partners.
Monday, commissioners voted to look into continuing the partnership and making it clear who is responsible for what.
County Judge Veronica Escobar said all three members are integral to the park’s success.
“The county will be responsible for the capital investment, the water company is responsible for providing the land and the school district will be responsible for maintenance,” Escobar said.
The aim is to prevent the park from falling into a state of disrepair again.
County staff told commissioners the park is in need of a lot of attention.
The playground equipment is damaged or missing pieces. The equipment also needs to be handicapped-accessible. County staff told commissioners shade structures should installed. There are drainage issues, and the park’s lighting is poor.
A community group has taken a lot of pride in the park and put in volunteer work such as painting patriotic murals.
Members like David Sublasky are excited to see the county pitching in to help bring the Veteran’s Park back to life.
“We hope to improve the playground equipment, the lighting, the landscape of the area. As she mentioned, there is some flooding issues that occur. So with everyone’ s assistance, help and collaboration, it should be a successful project long term,” Sublasky said.
County Judge Escobar says the approximately $160,000 would come from the county’s general fund.
It is hoped the improvements will be completed by next spring.
