Dozens gather for National Transgender Day of Awareness

Dozens gathered in El Paso for National Transgender Day of Awareness.

A dinner and discussion was held Sunday at the Houchen Community Center. Organizers said it was to fight for acceptance, and to remember those who have died due to hate.

The event comes 3 months after the murder of Erykah Tijerina, a transgender woman who was allegedly killed by a Fort Bliss soldier.

An autopsy report shows Tijerina was stabbed 24 times. Police have not said why they believe she was killed, but Tijerina’s loved ones believe it was a hate crime.
