NM State Police: Teen who wrecked stolen SUV dies

State police offices identified the teenager killed in a single vehicle crash as 17-year-old Brandon Garcia of Las Cruces.

The crash happened January 15, 2017 on Stern Drive near mile marker 4 in Las Cruces.

When officers arrived on scene, they located a white 2006 Chevrolet SUV which collided with a large tree. The vehicle was reported stolen to the Las Cruces Police Department hours before the wreck.

NMSP officers investigating the crash believe Garcia lost control of the SUV as a result of inclement weather. The vehicle vehicle exited the roadway and crashed into the tree

Garcia sustained critical injuries during the crash and was transported for medical treatment to the University Medical Center in El Paso, where he died.

Police are still investigating the theft of the SUV.
