Dozens protest President Trump at San Jacinto Plaza
Dozens of people held signs on Friday to protest President Donald Trump at San Jacinto Plaza in downtown El Paso.
Protesters said they gathered to demonstrate their steadfast dedication to upholding human dignity and rights.
The Border Network of Human Rights said it was a day of mourning and a day to vehemently reject Trump’s misogyny, racism, homophobia and Islamophobia.
“We are going to stand vigilant to make sure that the dignity and rights of all people are respected,” Robert Heyman said. “We don’t want families torn apart by the deportation forces that [Trump] promised and.. we don’t want our communities torn apart.”
One protester chimed in to say, ” [Trump] is not going to change who we are. We will still be here, he can’t get rid of us.”
The protestor’s confidence not shared by Cinthia Ventrar, brought illegally to the U.S. when she was too young to have any say in the matter.
“I am worried about being deported, I really worry about it for my family. I have two kids,” Ventrar said.
The Border Network for Human Rights echoed her concerns, and that is why they formed the protest. “We will be here for four years to make sure that the community remains intact,” Heyman said. “We don’t want to have families torn apart by the deportation forces that he promised.”
