Document: Man admitted to drinking Four Loko, smoking pot moments before deadly crash
The man charged in connection with a deadly crash allegedly told police he drank a Four Loko, a bottle of Parrot Bay, and smoked marijuana with a friend moments before the crash, a court document states.
Myriam Fernandez, the woman injured during the crash, succumbed to her injuries February 15, 2017, police said.
Manuel Watkins, 23, was originally charged with “Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury.” In the wake of Fernandez’s death, Watkins was charged with Intoxicated Manslaughter.
Watkins, driving a 2007 Honda Accord, was allegedly involved in a minor collision at Resler and Mesa February 9, 2017. Watkins allegedly drove away without providing “the necessary information required,” police said.
Watkins continued south on Mesa, allegedly running red lights at Mesa and Pitt and at Mesa and Champions, where he collided with a 2005 Toyota Corolla driven by Fernandez.
Police said Fernandez was driving north at the 100 block of Champions when Watkins collided with her vehicle.
Fernandez sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision and was rushed to University Medical Center.
Wells Fargo has set up the Myriam Fernandez Memorial Fund, where you can donate money to help the family pay funeral expenses. The account number is 2429967439.
Watkins was transported to Las Palmas Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries, then booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $200,000 bond.
