Art contest helps environment

Many have heard the saying “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

One local school is taking that to another level and creating a contest that turns trash into art.

Winners can win some money and get to meet Chelsea Clinton.

It’s called an art contest with a purpose. If you take a look at the pieces of work in the video above you might think, “I can see those in a gallery or may be a jewelry boutique” but they all have something in common. They are made out of recycled materials. Some materials were even found in the trash.

“There’s just so many benefits all the way around,” said Candace Printz, an art teacher at El Dorado High School.

The school entered a contest last year. Students created a community service project during which they adopted a highway, picked up the trash and made artwork out of it.

They won the contest and got the attention of Clinton, who visited the school in 2016.

Now El Dorado is holding a contest called It’s Your World Environmental Project.

“This would be great to promote recycling and the arts in the whole region,” Printz said.

The teacher says it a contest with a purpose.

“This kind of sets an example at a young age, about recycling and being creative and having an outlet but also helping their environment,” Printz told ABC-7.

The winners will have their art showcased at the El Paso International Museum of Art.

The idea has Clinton intrigued.

“She came for the kick off event but she wants to see this through so she will be coming back for the exhibit,” Printz said.

Printz wants to remind everyone this contest is open to the public and all artists young and old are welcomed.

“I really hope the community reaches out in some way and if their not artistic they can help spread the word,” Printz said.

The deadline to enter art work is March 31. Judging of the submitted artwork will be the first week of April, the winners will be announced at the El Paso International Museum of Art April 23 and you’ll get to meet with Clinton.
