911 calls from Las Cruces fire that claimed a young boy’s life

A Las Cruces family is mourning the loss of a 3-year-old boy after a house fire early Sunday morning.

The young boy who died on the city’s East Mesa is identified as Blayne Caballero.

The young boy’s parents, 23-year-old Mark Caballero and his fiancee Helen Huckabay, 21, safely escaped the burning home with their 7-month-old daughter, Sofie.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 26, Las Cruces firefighters were dispatched to 7742 Charro St. where they found a single-wide manufactured home on fire.

Despite his parent’s efforts, they were unable to save Blayne who was asleep in another room.

The 911 calls made after the fire broke out give a glimpse of horrific chaos that followed the family’s mobile home catching fire.

During a 911 call Caballero could be heard saying “Get him out! Get him out! Our house is on fire and we need help please. The baby is inside.”

911 operator: “We’ve got help on the way, OK?

Caballero: “Please hurry!”

A relative of the family was also calling 911 at the same time.

911 operator: “What is going on?”

Relative: “The house is on fire, the house if on fire.”

911 operator: “Is there a child inside, is that what you are saying?”

Relative: “Yes, yes.”

911 operator: OK. Is he the only one inside?

Relative: They are trying to get him out.

911 operator: OK. Who is trying to get him out?

Relative: “His parents.”

Despite their efforts, Blayne’s mom and dad just could not reach him.

The boy’s uncle,Chris Huckabay, lives next door.

“I got the fire extinguisher and was spraying it and it wasn’t doing enough. I would’ve gone in there but it was too hard for me to grab on to the window sill and pull myself in there. So, I go around the front door kicked it in and by the time I kicked the front door there was too much fire and I couldn’t get him out,” Huckabay said.

911 operator: “Can you make sure that everyone stays out please.”

As fire crews rushed toward the mobile home, Blayne’s family could only wait in agony.

911 operator: “Yeah, they say there is baby inside the house. Is there anybody else inside the house? What’s going on?”

Caballero: “The house is on fire, I keep trying to tell you.”

911 operator: OK. We’ve got everybody going, we’ve got everybody going. OK?”

The family’s pets– two dogs— were also trapped inside the mobile home.

911 operator: “Can you see the fire department there? Is the fire department there?”

Caballero: “Oh my God! Oh my God!”

When firefighters arrived they entered the burning home and located Blayne who was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The fire was extinguished and the manufactured home was declared a complete loss. Investigators also learned that two family pets – both dogs – also perished in the fire.

The cause of the fire is undetermined but still under investigation.

American Medical Response personnel provided care for two of the occupants of the home but their injuries were not serious and they were not hospitalized. No other injuries were reported.

The Red Cross was called and is assisting the family.
