El Paso man accused of killing mother arrested in New Mexico
The El Paso man accused of murdering his mother was arrested Friday in Southern New Mexico.
ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom has learned 31-year-old Fernando Alonzo Alarcon was arrested at 1:30 pm on Afton Road in La Mesa, New Mexico.
Alarcon was driving the silver Jeep Liberty mentioned by El Paso Police. The vehicle apparently had a flat tire and Alarcon had been driving on the vehicle’s rim for a while, investigators said.
A Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Deputy noticed Alarcon driving the vehicle on a rim and pulled him over. The deputy recognized Alarcon and took him into custody.
Earlier Friday, El Paso Police said Alarcon was on the loose and should be considered “armed and dangerous.” At the time of the arrest, Alarcon reportedly had a rifle in the backseat of his jeep.
The search began after EPPD officers were asked to check on the welfare of 62-year-old Graciela Acosta on April 20, 2017 at 8:45 am.
When officers arrived at her apartment at the complex at 5450 Suncrest, they found Acosta dead.
An investigation revealed Acosta had been murdered and a warrant for Murder was issued for Alarcon, the victim’s son.
Sheriff’s Deputies transported Alarcon to the department’s main headquarters in Las Cruces to await detectives from El Paso. After questioning, Alarcon was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond, pending extradition.
