Local golf legend honored to be selected for EP Athletic Hall of Fame

Rita Aguilar will be inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame on May 3 after a lifetime of success in each and every new venture.

Aguilar was a standout golfer at Texas A&M for four years before returning to El Paso where she dominated the golf scene for years. She then entered the world of business and had more success. She is currently the president and CEO of the Mountain Pass Coffee Company.

Through it all, she says she’s just tried to put her hometown on the map.

“I’m proud to be an El Pasoan,” she said. “I was proud to represent El Paso when I was out and about playing and competing. And we’re just a wonderful city, and it’s just great to be here.”

Aguilar won five city golf championships in El Paso, including four in a span of only six years.

She often dominated the competition, winning one city title by nine strokes and another by 15.

Aguilar had previously been nominated for the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame three times. As it turns out, the fourth time was actually the charm.

She said she is honored to join such an elite group, especially considering some of the golfers she admires are already enshrined in the local hall of fame.

“From a golf standpoint, I’m gonna be right there with Lee Trevino, Kristi Albers, J.P. Hayes – all Tour winners,” she said.

You can add the name “Rita Aguilar” to that list next week.

“For me to hang on the wall there with my plaque in the Don Haskins Center with them is just a really good feeling, and it’s very rewarding,” said Aguilar.
