TAI CHAN RETRIAL: Hotel Encanto security guard says he saw Chan with gun
Jurors in the retrial of the man accused of shooting and killing his fellow deputy heard from a security guard at the Hotel Encanto.
Tai Chan, a former Santa Fe County Deputy, is on trial for shooting his partner, Jeremy Martin. Chan was tried in 2016, but that trial ended in a hung jury.
Thursday, Marvin Zamora he was on shift when both Martin and Chan arrived at the hotel after a night of drinking. Zamora testified the men arrived late in the evening and were arguing.
Zamora told jurors he went to the 7th floor of the hotel to do his rounds when he heard a loud bang.
He said he took cover behind a pillar when he heard more bangs and screaming.
Zamora said that’s when he saw Martin, bleeding from the shoulder and chest area, coming towards him.
Zamora told jurors he also saw Chan coming down the hall with his gun pointed upwards. He said he heard more gunfire, then ran away.
Zamora also told the jury though he couldn’t see where the gunfire was coming from, but testified he heard Martin yell, “Call 911!”
After running away, Zamora then radioed the front desk and called 911. When he arrived at the front desk of the hotel, he saw a bloodied Martine at the elevator.
Jurors heard portions of the 911 call.
