Community Champions: Lordsburg Mavericks had magical year
In the world of sports, there are a few different versions of the Triple Crown.
One, for instance, occurs when a horse wins the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes.
Another occurs in baseball when a player leads his league in home runs, RBI, and batting average.
The Lordsburg Mavericks, however, achieved a different kind of Triple Crown this past year by winning state titles in the three major sports – football, basketball, and baseball.
The Mavericks started things off with a state crown in football and followed that up by going to The Pit and claiming a title in basketball over Mesilla Valley Christian. The baseball team then followed up that win by beating Mesilla Valley Christian once again in their state title clash.
As if that weren’t already enough, the Mavericks also claimed second in state in track and field as well as cheerleading.
Lordsburg competes at the 2A level in New Mexico. The town’s population, according to 2014 national population projection figures, is a little over 2,600.
