NMDOT: Five tips to keep safe driving in a dust storm

After the deadly 25-car crash near Lordsburg Monday evening, the New Mexico Department of Transportation listed five tips for drivers when traveling through a dust storm.

Tip 1: Don’t wait until the visibility is so bad – you can’t see to pull off the highway.

Tip 2: Try to completely exit the highway and try not to stop in a lane.

Tip 3: Turn off your lights.

Tip 4: Put on your emergency brake.

Tip 5: Stay in your car, with your seat belt on and wait until the storm passes.

If you do get caught in a storm of dust between Deming and Lordsburg, which is common for that area, most escape exits are within five miles from the other.
