UTEP introduces freshman center Joey St. Pierre
UTEP basketball added a new addition to their team in freshman center Joey St. Pierre this offseason.
He attended Richmond-Burton HS in Spring Grove, Ill.
At 6-10, 280 pounds, Pierre is bound to make an impact for the Miners.
He averaged 13.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.6 blocks with three double-doubles in his last high school season, while his best performance was 26 points and 17 rebounds vs. Woodstock High School.
However, he missed the the last half of his senior season after undergoing kidney surgery.
St. Pierre was regarded as the no. 11 player in Illinois by ESPN and was also a tight end and receiver on his high school football team in the fall of 2016.
He spent three seasons on the varsity basketball team in high school and appeared in a total of 68 games overall, averaging 11.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.7 blocks.
St. Pierre says the biggest key to becoming a contributor for UTEP will be his ability to adjust to the speed of the college game.
“I mean, it’s faster at the college level. It’s a lot faster, a lot more intense,” he said. “But just getting used to the speed is what I have to do. And, I mean, it’s been like two and a half weeks and I’m already getting used to the speed. So, with time it’ll come.”
