Local softball players honored with All-State and All-America distinctions

Four softball players from El Paso were recently honored at the state and national level.

Coronado star outfielder Abigale Carney was named to the MaxPreps All-America Second Team after posting 24 home runs to lead the Thunderbirds her senior season.

Carney finished her career with 53 home runs and helped lead her team to 31 wins and a trip to the regional semifinals.

Three other local players were honored by the Texas Sports Writers Association, including two members of a Chapin squad that made it to the 5A Elite 8.

Chapin pitcher Kristin Fifield and catcher Jazmyne Armendariz were both named to the 5A All-State First Team. They helped lead the Huskies to the program’s first-ever appearance in the Elite 8.

Meanwhile, Montwood outfielder Sarah Polanco was named an All-State honorable mention at the 6A level. She batted .465 last season for the Rams, scoring 35 runs.
