Tennessee man killed in wreck involving El Paso women

A man riding in a vehicle being hauled by an El Paso woman’s SUV was killed after the tow strap snapped, leaving him stranded in the middle of the highway, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The crash happened at 1:45 am on I-10 about seven miles west of Fort Hancock in Hudspeth County.

DPS officials said Emma Mercado, 31, of El Paso, was driving a 2001 Ford SUV. Mercado was hauling A 2003 Chrysler SUV, DPS said.

The driver of the Chrysler was identified as Stankeevion Wimbley, 19, of McMinnville, Tennessee. Wimbley’s passenger was identified as Crystal Carrasco, 30, of El Paso.

Wimbley stepped out of his vehicle in an effort to push it to the side of the road when the tow strap snapped, DPS said.

At that same time, David Carvajal, 63, of Laredo, Texas, was also headed west on I-10. Carvajal collided with Wimbley’s SUV and ran over Wimbley, DPS said.

Winbley was pronounced dead on scene. Carrasco was rushed to University Medical Center in El Paso.

Carvajal and Mercado were not injured, DPS said.

No charges have been filed.
