Fort Bliss soldier acquitted of rape
Update (October 17, 2024): The soldier was found not guilty and acquitted. The matter has also been expunged from his record.
A Fort Bliss soldier is one of two men accused of planning and carrying out the rape of a woman in Kirkland, Washington, the Seattle Times reports.
The paper reports jail records show the 23-year-old 2nd Lieutenant was released from jail Friday after posting a $100,000 bond.
The paper's report the soldier is stationed at Fort Bliss was confirmed by a spokesperson on post Tueday. "He is still a soldier stationed at Fort Bliss and he is a 2nd Lieutenant," the spokesperson stated.
The second suspect, 28-year-old Levi Brower, remains jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail.
The Seattle Times reports both men have been charged with second-degree rape for allegedly attacking an intoxicated woman at her Kirkland home July 2, 2017. According to the paper, King County prosecutors said the men shared an Uber ride with the accuser from a bar in Seattle.
Prosecutors say the men told the accuser they were brothers, which wasn't true, lied about their names, where they were from and said they were taking their grandmother to church the next morning.
Police in Kirkland were able to identify the pair with information from Uber records, which included Mariutto's cellphone number, coupled with photos posted by the suspects on Facebook.
