Socorro election results

The City of Socorro has a new mayor, Ivy Avalos, who won the mayoral race Saturday night beating her closest challenger, Elia Garcia, by 13 votes.

In the race for the city’s District 2 representative race Jesus Ruiz won with 51 votes, beating two other candidates.

Unlike other elections within the county of El Paso, the City of Socorro’s charter states that a candidate will be elected by plurality not by 50 percent or more of the votes.

The charter specifically states “At any regular or special election for the city council including the office of mayor, the candidate for each position or place who receives the greatest number of votes shall be declared elected.”

Ralph Duran 42 votes 32.56% Manuel Portillo 36 votes 27.91% Jesus Ruiz 51 votes 39.53% Total 129
