Man riding in pickup accidentally fires weapon, round strikes woman in the head

Police say a man riding in a pickup truck accidentally discharged a firearm, striking a female passenger.

The shooting happened at about 2 am on the 4300 block of N. Mesa Thursday.

The preliminary investigation revealed two men and a woman were traveling on N. Mesa in a pickup.

One of the men was driving, while the other was riding in a back seat. The woman was in the front passenger seat.

During the commute, the man riding in the rear seat was handling a firearm that discharged, police said.

Police said the round struck the roof of the truck, changed directions and struck the female front passenger.

EMS crews rushed the passenger to University Medical Center. Police described her injury as a “superficial head injury.”

No charges filed at this time.
