Day care workers charged after child dies in hot car
Two day care workers accused of leaving a baby and a toddler in a hot car for more than an hour say they discovered the children when they went to grab paperwork from the vehicle.
Eastern New Mexico News reports 31-year-old Sandi Taylor and her mother, 62-year-old Mary Taylor, are charged with child abuse after 22-month-old Maliyah Jones died Tuesday afternoon.
A second child left in the car, three-year-old Aubrianna Loya, remains in critical condition at a hospital in Lubbock. Loya is receiving further treatment based on “a loss of body function, high body temperature and inability to breathe on her own,” according to the Eastern New Mexico News.
The Taylors, who operate Taylor Tots daycare, reportedly took 12 children to a park for lunch on Tuesday and returned to the daycare around 1:30 p.m.
Court records state the two women took 10 of the children inside but forgot two who needed help getting out of their car seats.
Sandi Taylor found the children an hour and a half later. Officials say both women attempted CPR on discovery and Sandi Taylor called 911.
Both women are being held at the Roosevelt County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing set for July 27.
