Gang Unit arrests two wanted suspects
The El Paso Police Department’s Gang Unit, actively seeking wanted suspects to reduce gang activity, arrested a man and a woman with outstanding warrants this week.
A traffic stop Thursday led to the arrest of an man wanted in Austin, Texas.
Police officers pulled over Antonio Cardenas, 24, on the 3900 block of Hayes, at about 2:15 pm for an alleged red light violation.
Cardenas, driving a Lincoln Continental, was acting nervous and fidgeting, police said.
Cardenas, who allegedly lied about his name and birthdate, was found to be wanted in Austin for a parole violation.
Police said officers also found multiple pills believed to be controlled substances.
Police charged Cardenas with Parole Violation, Failure to Identify, Possesion of a Dangerous Drug and Possesion of a Controlled Substance. His bonds totaled $4,750.
A 14-year-old boy with Cardenas was wanted wanted on a Directive to Apprehend, a juvenile’s version of a warrant. The teen was processed and released to the Juvenile Probation Department.
Also Thursday, police officers were able to locate a wanted woman on the 3800 block of Altura Avenue.
Belinda Mata, 35, was arrested and booked on two counts of Possesion of a Controlled Substance as well as a single count of Abandoning or Endangering a Child.
Police said those charges stem from an investigation in January, 28, 2017, when two people called to report a woman had fallen.
Mata, who police say was responsible for the well-being of a child at the time, was allegedly found to be “intoxicated to the point of hospitalization.”
