El Pasoan referees El Clsico in game’s debut in the U.S.

Ronaldo might have missed Real Madrid’s meeting with Barcelona in Miami, but one El Pasoan did not.

In fact, he had perhaps the best view of anyone in the stadium.

El Paso native Jair Marrufo was given the honor of officiating the first-ever rendition of El Clásico held in the United States.

The match, held as part of the International Champions Cup, ended in a 3-2 victory for Barcelona. The win secured the Cup for Barcelona.

Marrufo, who attended Del Valle High School, comes from a family of officials. His father, Antonio, also served as a FIFA referee and was a member of the Mexican Referee Commission.

Jair has been an MLS referee for more than 17 years now and was even called on to officiate the 2015 MLS Final.

He was also a candidate for an officiating role in both the 2010 and 2014 World Cups and has previously stated he hopes to represent El Paso at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Jair told KVIA back in 2015 that he began officiating as a 19-year-old. Back then, he was refereeing games for eight-year-olds.

Tonight, he officiated perhaps the greatest rivalry in the sports world.
