Stray bullet strikes, kills 14-year-old Las Cruces girl

A 14-year-old Las Cruces teenager is dead after being hit in the head by a stray bullet.

The shooting occurred shortly after 3 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 1400 block of Monte Vista Avenue.

“We woke up to a lot of lights, sirens, police cars everywhere,” neighbor Jose Sanchez said. “It’s pretty quiet during the week, but on the weekend it gets pretty packed. The streets get parked with cars, usually because of parties,” neighbor Jose Sanchez said.

Las Cruces police said there was a large gathering at an apartment when someone drove by and fired into the complex and gathering.

One of the bullets went through a wall striking the teen in the head, killing her.

“I have two children, my son’s bedroom is right there by the street. if it was the other way on this side, it could have been him. and that worries me,” Sanchez said.

At this time investigators have made no arrests.
