Mosquitoes swarm local apartment complex, resident considers moving

Residents say the mosquitoes at the Santa Teresa Terrace have become a nuisance after heavy rains.

“The moquitoes outside are so bad we can’t walk the kids to school or take the dogs out,” a resident who wishes to remain anonymous told ABC-7. “My daughters are covered in hives on their scalps backs and legs.”

The concerned parent said she has been asking the apartment complex to address the issue for weeks. “You can see them physically with your eyes,” the resident said. Monsoon season storms have left at least six ponding areas around the complex. “The more it rains the more the water rises and the more mosquitoes we have.”

The tenant says the county told her it can’t spray on private property. She claims the apartment management told her they’re not obligated to take care of the mosquitoes. Officials with Santa Teresa Terrance refused to comment, but our crews saw pest control spraying lawns Friday afternoon.

“We are spraying for mosquitoes,” said the contractor employee through the apartment complex.

Although wishing to stay anonymous, the man did speak with reporter Evan Folan. “We are killing the adult mosquitoes out here,” he said. “They like to harbor in the grass and vegetation.”

The employee said he had done a lot of mosquito control, but said this job ranks up as one of the worst.

“There is a threat of Zika, but it’s not in the area, however there is a threat,” he said. “Mosquitoes are a disease transmitter and you should be careful.”

The contractor says for the spray to be effective it should be done at least once a month.
