Jacob Hernandez of Pebble Hills wins Sweet Play of the Week

A player from Pebble Hills has been nominated for the Sweet Play of the Week sponsored by Southwest University almost every week this year, but the Spartans finally broke through with a victory.

Jacob Hernandez won this week’s fan vote after his tremendous punt block and touchdown recovery last Friday against Coronado. (Click the video above to see the play).

Hernandez came flying in to block a punt, sending the ball rolling toward the end zone. Though Hernandez was momentarily on the ground after the block, he somehow managed to get to his feet and recover the ball before anyone else for a Pebble Hills touchdown.

The crazy part is he didn’t know where the ball landed after he initially blocked it.

“I didn’t know where it was I expected one of my teammates to be picking it up and scoring with it. I just saw it rolling there. I figured hopefully I would get there in time to pick it up and score it. And, luckily, I did,” said Hernandez.

That play helped the Spartans top the Thunderbirds by a final of 31-20 to keep their perfect record intact (5-0).

Pebble Hills will again put its perfect record on the line on Friday against Americas at the SAC.

Catch all the highlights from that game and other key matchups around the area Friday night at 10:35 p.m. on the Borderland Blitz.
