TxDOT looks to improve traffic in booming Northwest El Paso
The Texas Department of Transportation is looking to improve traffic in Northwest El Paso, as the area experiences a boom in business.
The area is seeing increased development in businesses, homes, medical facilities and entertainment. Transmountain Partners is planning to build a massive new mall and entertainment complex, which is currently under construction.
Megachurch Abundant Living Faith Center recently opened its Northwest campus and two new hospitals recently opened their doors, including the Hospitals of Providence and University Medical Center’s West Clinic.
“I think this place really needs, I think el paso in general needs a good pick up,” one lifelong resident told ABC-7.
TxDOT *is exploring the possibility of widening I-10.
“Ease traffic, the flow and movement would be much better in that area then it is today and it will accommodate for the growth we’ve already seen happen there,” Jennifer Wright, TxDOT spokewoman said.
Wright tells ABC-7 as part of Reimagine I-10 they’ve studied the I-10 corridor from the New Mexico state line to Tornillo.
While plans are still preliminary, they want to match the New Mexico stretch of I-10 which is currently three lanes of traffic. It would distribute traffic from the stateline to I-10 and Sunland Park.
“Widening up I-10 to where it meets up with the Go-10 project at Mesa is going to be a big benefit,” Wright said.
It’s unclear how much the project would cost, but it would be part of the 2-3 billion dollars allocated to Reimagine I-10.
“We see growth happening and we realize that we have to move to meet it,” Wright said.
Wright tells ABC-7 they would finish the BorderWest Expressway and I-10 before moving on to Northwest El Paso which could be in the next five years.
